How to Install VMD Module on Ubuntu

As a chemistry student who has been using Linux for some time, I was excited to discover that Ubuntu now supports the Volume Management Device (VMD) module. However, during my recent installation process, I encountered an issue where the NVMe disk under VMD PCI domain was not visible in the installer. After some research and troubleshooting, I found a solution to include the VMD module in initramfs by installing a specific package.

Step 1: Update SPL and ZFS

The first step is to update the SPL (SCSI Midlayer Protocol) and ZFS packages. This can be done using the following command:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade spl zfs

```

Step 2: Install Initramfs-Tools

To include the VMD module in initramfs, we need to install the `initramfs-tools` package. You can do this by running the following command:

sudo apt-get install initramfs-tools

```

Alternatively, you can use `linux-initramfs-tool` instead.

Step 3: Configure Initramfs

Once installed, we need to configure initramfs to include the VMD module. This can be done by editing the `/etc/initramfs-tools/modules` file and adding the following line:

vmd

```

After making the changes, you need to update the initramfs configuration using the following command:

sudo update-initramfs -u

```

Step 4: Reboot Your System

Finally, reboot your system to apply the changes. After restarting, you should be able to see the NVMe disk under VMD PCI domain in the installer.
